Remote Buddy is an application that provides you an interface which allows you to control almost anything on your Mac just using the remote control. Besides the tools that allow you to emulate the keyboard and the mouse, the CD/DVD eject functionality, the termination of applications and much more, Remote Buddy can also control the applications directly. The program improves very much the standard behavior of the Macintosh remote controller. I have to say that this application impressed me from the beginning. I always liked the freedom that's provided by a wireless remote controller. Apple has its credit here, since the latest Macs are shipped with a bundled remote controller that can be used in order to control iTunes, Front Row and other Apple applications. This program is not limited to the Apple remotes only, you can use other remotes too. You can access anything with the support from this application by using only the remote controller. If you would like to move around and use your Mac at the same time, then this is the kind of application you would need. Forget about the keyboard if you don't need it. And if you do need it, you can store into the application's preferences key sequences that you can execute every time you need this. The application has the support for virtual keyboard sequence replay. If that is not enough, then you can try activating the virtual cursor keys support. You can forget about the mouse too. Remote Buddy can emulate every pointing device and all its actions. The support for multimedia applications is simply amazing. The best multimedia support that this application can give is for the applications that come bundle with Mac OS X. This kind of functionality can be extended from the Remote Buddy's 'Preferences' panel. For example, you can see iTunes doing things it never did before. Behind this good looking interface that the application provides, there are a lot of settings that you can change. Basically, you can use your custom setup for almost anything. It is recommended to use the application's online documentation in order to discover new things about it. Another thing that I do recommend is to check the producer's website. It has a really nice Flash presentation of this application and you can find there things that could interest you. Pluses: it extends the Mac's remote controller functionality, it has the support for Mac OS X bundle applications, it is very customizable, it gives you wireless freedom, you can use other remote controllers on your Mac with this application. The trial period is sixty days, but Remote Buddy convinced me in ten minutes. In conclusion: Considering the low price for an application like this, I believe it's worth every effort in order to get it.

Word has a ruler feature that enables you to do reasonably accurate layout work right within a Word document. The Microsoft Word ruler is useful for creating resumes, cover letters, forms, brochures, and other documents where it matters where and how big type or graphics elements are.
An on screen ruler for a Windows Desktop PC user who needs to keep an eye on a line of data whilst looking at something else and back again. One often sees people pointing at the screen with their finger to keep their eye on a value while doing something else with their mouse pointer, perhaps on another screen.

We live in an age, when the words aristocrat and democrat are much used, without regard to the real significations. An aristocrat is one of a few, who possess the political power of a country; a democrat, one of the many. The words are also properly applied to those who entertain notions favorable to aristocratical, or democratical forms of government. Such persons are not, necessarily, either aristocrats, or democrats in fact, but merely so in opinion. Thus a member of a democratical government may have an aristocratical bias, and vice versa.
To call a man who has the habits and opinions of a gentleman, an aristocrat, from that fact alone, is an abuse of terms, and betrays ignorance of the true principles of government, as well as of the world. It must be an equivocal freedom, under which every one is not the master of his own innocent acts and associations, and he is a sneaking democrat, indeed, who will submit to be dictated to, in those habits over which neither law nor morality assumes a right of control.
Some men fancy that a democrat can only be one who seeks the level, social, mental and moral, of the majority, a rule that would at once exclude all men of refinement, education and taste from the class. These persons are enemies of democracy, as they at once render it impracticable. They are usually great sticklers for their own associations and habits, too, though unable to comprehend any of a nature that are superior. They are, in truth, aristocrats in principle, though assuming a contrary pretension; the ground work of all their feelings and arguments being self. Such is not the intention of liberty, whose aim is to leave every man to be the master of his own acts; denying hereditary honors, it is true, as unjust and unnecessary, but not denying the inevitable consequences of civilization.
The law of God is the only rule of conduct, in this, as in other matters. Each man should do as he would be done by. Were the question put to the greatest advocate of indiscriminate association, whether he would submit to have his company and habits dictated to him, he would be one of the first to resist the tyranny; for they, who are the most rigid in maintaining their own claims, in such matters, are usually the loudest in decrying those whom they fancy to be better off than themselves. Indeed, it may be taken as a rule in social intercourse, that he who is the most apt to question the pretensions of others, is the most conscious of the doubtful position he himself occupies; thus establishing the very claims he affects to deny, by letting his jealousy of it be seen. Manners, education and refinement, are positive things, and they bring with them innocent tastes which are productive of high enjoyments; and it is as unjust to deny their possessors their indulgence, as it would be to insist on the less fortunate's passing the time they would rather devote to athletic amusements, in listening to operas for which they have no relish, sung in a language they do not understand.
All that democracy means, is as equal a participation in rights as is practicable; and to pretend that social equality is a condition of popular institutions, is to assume that the latter are destructive of civilization, for, as nothing is more self-evident than the impossibility of raising all men to the highest standard of tastes and refinement, the alternative would be to reduce the entire community to the lowest. The whole embarrasment on this point exists in the difficulty of making men comprehend qualities they do not themselves possess. We can all perceive the difference between ourselves and our inferiors, but when it comes to a question of the difference between us and our superiors, we fail to appreciate merits of which we have no proper conceptions. In face of this obvious difficulty, there is the safe and just governing rule, already mentioned, or that of permitting every one to be the undisturbed judge of his own habits and associations, so long as they are innocent, and do not impair the rights of others to be equally judges for themselves. It follows, that social intercourse must regulate itself, independently of institutions, with the exception that the latter, while they withold no natural, bestow no factitious advantages beyond those which are inseparable from the rights of property, and general civilization.
In a democracy, men are just as free to aim at the highest attainable places in society, as to obtain the largest fortunes; and it would be clearly unworthy of all noble sentiment to say, that the grovelling competition for money shall alone be free, while that which enlists all the liberal acquirements and elevated sentiments of the race, is denied the democrat. Such an avowal would be at once, a declaration of the inferiority of the system, since nothing but ignorance and vulgarity could be its fruits.
The democratic gentleman must differ in many essential particulars, from the aristocratical gentleman, though in their ordinary habits and tastes they are virtually indentical. Their principles vary; and, to a slight degree, their deportment accordingly. The democrat, recognizing the right of all to participate in power, will be more liberal in his general sentiments, a quality of superiority in itself; but, in conceding this much to his fellow man, he will proudly maintain his own independence of vulgar domination, as indispensable to his personal habits. The same principles and manliness that would induce him to depose a royal despot, would induce him to resist a vulgar tyrant.
There is no more capital, though more common error, than to suppose him an aristocrat who maintains his indepedence of habits; for democracy asserts the control of the majority, only, in matters of law, and not in matters of custom. The very object of the institution is the utmost practicable personal liberty, and to affirm the contrary, would be sacrificing the end to the means.

An aristocrat, therefore, is merely one who fortifies his exclusive privileges by positive institutions, and a democrat, one who is willing to admit of a free competition, in all things. To say, however, that the last supposes this competition will lead to nothing, is an assumption that means are employed without any reference to an end. He is the purest democrat who best maintains his rights, and no rights can be dearer to a man of cultivation, than exemptions from unseasonable invasions on his time, by the coarse-minded and ignorant.

Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America is a book by Robert Whitaker published in 2010 by Crown.[1][2][3] Whitaker asks why the number of Americans who receive government disability for mental illness approximately doubled since 1987.[4]
In the book, Whitaker tries to answer that question and examines the long-term outcomes for the mentally ill in the U.S.

Magic bullets[edit]

Whitaker begins by reviewing the discovery of antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants. These were discovered as side effects during research for antihistamines (specifically promethazine), gram negative antibiotics (specifically mephenesin) and the anti-tuberculosis agents isoniazid and iproniazid respectively. The psychiatric mechanisms of action of these drugs were not known at the time and these were initially called major tranquilizers (now typical antipsychotics) due to their induction of 'euphoric quietude'; minor tranquilizers (now benzodiazepines) and psychic energizers (now antidepressants) due to patients 'dancing in the wards.'[5] These compounds were developed during a period of growth for the pharmaceutical industry bolstered by the 1951 Durham-Humphrey Amendment, giving physicians monopolistic prescribing rights thus aligning the interests of physicians and pharmaceutical companies. This also followed the industry's development of 'magic bullets' that treat people with, for example, diabetes, which according to Whitaker provided an analogy to sell the idea of these drugs to the public. It was not until many years later, after the mechanisms of these drugs were determined, that the serotonergic hypothesis of depression and dopaminergic hypothesis of schizophrenia were developed to fall in line with the drug's mechanisms. According to Whitaker's analysis of the primary literature, lower levels of serotonin and higher levels of dopamine 'have proved to be true in patients WITH prior exposure to antidepressants or antipsychotics (ie as homeostatic mechanisms) but NOT in patients without prior exposure.'

Whitaker further criticizes the magic bullet theory by attacking the historical notion that the 'invention of the antipsychotic Thorazine' emptied the asylums.[6] His case begins by showing that during the late 1940s and 1950s ~75% of cases admitted for first episode schizophrenia recovered to the community by approximately 3 years (Thorazine was not released until 1955).[7][8][9] He then notes that the arrival of Thorazine did not improve discharge rates in the 1950s for people newly diagnosed with schizophrenia. In fact, based on the only large scale first episode schizophrenia study of this era, 88% of those who were not treated were discharged within eighteen months compared to 74% of neuroleptic treated.[10] This is additionally evidenced by the fact that when Thorazine was introduced in 1955 there were 267 thousand schizophrenia patients in state and county mental hospitals, and eight years later, there were 253 thousand, thus indicating that the advent of neuroleptics barely budged the number of hospitalized patients.[11] What he argues actually cleared the asylums was the beginning of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. These programs provided federal subsidies for nursing home care but no such subsidy for care in state mental hospitals, and so the states, seeking to save money, began sending their chronic patients to nursing homes.
Psychiatric drugs[edit]
Whitaker acknowledges that psychiatric medications do sometimes work but believes that they must be used in a 'selective, cautious manner. It should be understood that they’re not fixing any chemical imbalances. And honestly, they should be used on a short-term basis.'[12]
Whitaker traces the effects of what looks like an iatrogenic epidemic:[13] the drugs that patients receive can perturb their normal brain function.[14]

Whitaker suggests that the 'wonder drug' glow around the second generation psychotropics has long since disappeared. He views the 'hyping' of the top-selling atypical antipsychotics as 'one of the more embarrassing episodes in psychiatry's history, as one government study after another failed to find that they were any better than the first-generation anti-psychotics.'[15]
One of Whitaker's solutions is the style of care documented by professor Jaakko Seikkula at Keropudas Hospital in Tornio in Lapland where drugs are given to patients only on a limited basis, with good outcomes. According to Whitaker, the district has the lowest per capita spending on mental health of all health districts in Finland.[16] He also advocates that those with depression engage in exercise.
Children[edit]
Whitaker sees that children are vulnerable to being prescribed a lifetime of drugs. As the author says, a psychiatrist and parents may give a child a 'cocktail' to force him or her to behave. Then when this child reaches the age of eighteen, Whitaker says the child often becomes a disabled adult.[17]
Review of data and statistics[edit]
Whitaker spent a year and a half researching for this book,[14] and maintains a website listing some relevant studies.[18]
Reception and media coverage[edit]
Whitaker did interviews with Salon and The Boston Globe during the release of this book.[12][19] He also did a book tour, and he spoke for an hour and a half on C-SPAN where there is an archived video.[20] Still, in his book he says that this story was never told in mainstream newspapers.[21] For example, Whitaker says a study of long-term outcomes for people with schizophrenia done by Martin Harrow in 2007 (which Whitaker thinks is the best work ever done on the subject in the U.S) was never in a National Institute of Mental Health press release and thus never reached reporters at U.S. newspapers.[22]
A review by sleep researcher Dennis Rosen for The Boston Globe concludes that 'although extensively researched and drawing upon hundreds of sources, the gaps in his theory remain too large for him to succeed in making a convincing argument', and compares Whitaker to Thabo Mbeki and AIDS denialism.[23] The book received positive reviews from New Scientist,[2]The Record,[3]Time magazine,[1] and Salon.[12]

Windows 10 is built to have smarter and faster responses when processing commands and requests. For example, when you plug in a new hard drive, it will automatically perform the necessary actions to integrate the new device to other components of the system. However, it does not follow that this process is invulnerable— sometimes, the system fails to detect the hard drive.
OVERVIEW OF THE ERROR 'HARD DRIVE NOT SHOWING UP'
There are a few scenarios that a Windows user might encounter when they install a new internal hard drive:
Internal Hard Drive does not show up in Windows Disk Management
If the new drive cannot be found when using the Disk Management feature, the physical installation might have failed. You can try opening the BIOS menu and locate the drive from there.

Can't see the hard drive in Windows 10
If the hard drive is improperly installed, or subjected to faulty initialization and format, the hard drive will not show up.
The external hard drive does not appear
External hard drives may also not be included in the list, especially when the drive becomes corrupted or damaged.
Hard drive won't appear in File Explorer, BIOS or PC
If the internal hard drive is nowhere to be found, the problem may be due to a connection issue.
FIXING THE 'HARD DRIVE NOT SHOWING UP' ERROR
1. CHECK IF DISK IS CONNECTED PROPERLY
a. It's important to double-check the connections from your hard drive to the PC. Ensure that the cables connecting the hard drive to the power supply or motherboard are in place. If data cables are switched or misplaced, the system cannot detect the hard drive.
If you do not know how to check wires, do not attempt to plug/unplug any connected cables on the drive. Rather, have an expert look at your computer.
2. INITIALIZE DISK
a. Press Win + X and choose the Disk Management selection.
b. On the Disk Management window, you will see a list of all connected hard drives to the PC. Choose the drive that is unallocated and unknown. Right-click on it and select Initialize Disk.

c. A prompt will ask you whether you want the hard drive to have a GUID Partition Table (GPT) or Master Boot Record (MBR). Select one and click OK. (GPT is usually recommended, but you can read up about these two online before choosing).
d. The window will redirect to the Disk Management window. Select the initialized hard drive (listed as Online and Basic) and right-click. Choose New Simple Volume. Click on Next.
e. Assign a drive letter.
f. Format the drive in the simple volume by following the wizard. Most users prefer the NFTS file system. Perform a quick format.
g. Restart your PC.
3. UPDATE DRIVERS
a. On your search bar, type Settings and click on Update & Security.
b. Choose Windows Update and then click the Check for updates selection.
c. Wait for the update to complete. If an update is published in the Windows Update service, updates will be downloaded and installed automatically.
4. RUN DISKPART COMMAND
a. Launch Command Prompt.
b. On the command line, key in diskpart and hit Enter.
c. Type these commands one by one and click Enter key after each one:
list disk
select disk
clean
d. When prompt says the command is executed successfully, close Command window and restart your PC.
Note: make sure that you are running diskpart on the correct hard drive to make sure that no data is wiped.
5. CHECK BIOS
a. Reboot your PC. When the Windows logo appears, click F2 or DEL a few times to enter the BIOS interface.
b. Check whether the hard drive is in the list of all connected drives. If it does not appear, it could probably be because the hard drive is not connected properly.
6. CONNECT THE HARD DRIVE IN ANOTHER PORT
A hard drive malfunction may be caused by faulty wiring or damaged ports. Connect your hard drive to another SATA port on the PC's motherboard. If after doing this, the hard drive remains undiscoverable, the problem may be on the cables. You can try replacing old cables with new ones and check to see if the drive is now listed as a connected drive.
If you do not have any prior knowledge about hard drive cables and ports, do not attempt to do this method on your own. It would be better to approach an IT expert who knows their way around computers to avoid damaging your system further.

Update January 14, 2013: Intermec announced integrated RFID capabilities for its ultra-rugged CK70, CN70 and CN70e mobile computers. The devices now offer a fully-integrated UHF RFID reader without the need of an external antenna by using Intermec's IM11 embedded module along with an internally housed antenna. This way, customers get RFID read performance without changes to the compact form factor of the 70 Series mobile computers.

Update January 23, 2012: Intermec announced two enhancements to its 70 Series of rugged handhelds. The first is a switch from the 600MHz TI OMAP 3530 processor, an older 65nm design, to a 1GHz TI Sitara 3715 chip, a newer 45nm design that is fully OMAP architecture compatible. While still using an ARM Cortex A8 core and a POWERVR SGX Graphics Accelerator, the 3715's faster clock speed, up to 2X graphics performance, and lower power consumption mean a considerable step up in performance. The second is that three of the four 70 Series models -- the CN70, CN70e, and CK70 -- can now be ordered with what Intermec calls its 'Flexible Network radio' module based on Qualcomm's Gobi 3000 technology and usable on both CDMA and UMTS wireless networks, enabling automatic and seamless 'in route' switching between different carrier networks.
On January 11, 2011, Intermec announced the CN70 Series of ultra-rugged computers. The 70 Series initially includes four models, those being the CN70e, the CK70, the CK71, and the CN70 discussed in this article. The reason why Intermec offers four models addressing different applications and industries is what Intermec considers the advantages of a 'common platform' approach: same architecture, same peripherals, same docks, same software builds, same technology. This can result in reduced complexity in deployment, updating, management, and also in lower total cost of ownership.
While the four models in the 70 Series address different markets and highlight different functionality, all share common core components:
All are based on Microsoft Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 (see Microsoft's release on it), which is sort of a minor evolution of Windows Mobile 6.5.3.
All use a 600MHz Texas Instruments OMAP 3530 processor, an ARM Cortex-A8 based chip that Intermec says provides 3X performance, but we're not sure compared to what.
All have a 3.5-inch full-VGA 480x640 pixel touch display with LED backlight, light sensor, and Corning Gorilla Glass for vastly increased durability.
All feature most impressive ruggedness specs, including a 6-foot drop spec, IP67 sealing, and a very wide -4 to 140 degree Fahrenheit operating temperature range.
All include a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, advanced imaging options for just about any scanning application, accelerometer and digital compass, and VoIP and speech recognition support.
Of note also a number of Intermec software management initiatives, such as INcontrol asset tracking, SmartSystem device health reporting, etc.
What's unique about the CN70?
The CN70 is the lightest and most compact of the CN70 Series, using the standard Pocket PC/PDA form factor with your choice of either a numeric or a QWERTY thumb-type keyboard. The CN70 is specifically targeted at applications in field service, transportation, logistics and such.

Measuring 3.14 x 6.66 x 1.35 inches and weighing just under a pound, the CN70 can be ordered either with a 29-key numeric keypad or with a 44-key QWERTY layout. Both are backlit, and each was designed with certain applications in mind.
For scanning, the CN70 uses the EA30 high-performance motion-tolerant 2D Imager that features white LED illumination, a red laser aimer optimized for all lighting conditions, a 35 degree downward scan angle, and is capable of scanning all common 1D and 2D barcodes. There is also an integrated 5-megapixel auto-focus digital camera option with flash. When used with Intermec's eMDI software, the camera can capture standard paper documents and convert them into electronic files. There is also an embedded accelerometer used for screen rotation, system suspend, or developers can use it to provide input to custom apps.
On the wireless side, the CN70 has integrated Class II Bluetooth Version 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), dual band 802.11a/b/g/n, and either UMTS/HSUPA or CDMA/EVDO Rev. A wireless WAN. There's also an integrated and network-independent 12-channel GPS.
The battery is a fairly beefy 3.7 Volt/4,000 mAH Li-Ion rechargeable that, per Intermec, yields 'the industry's longest battery life.' Good thing, too, as VDC Research found that battery life ranks on top of features considered important by rugged handheld users.

It is not immediately clear what all the CN70 will replace in Intermec's product lineup. Judging by its specs, it seems to supercede the CN3 and CN4, which are roughly the same size and screen size, but are based on older processors, only have QVGA resolution, and are somewhat less rugged. The CN50, on the other hand, is noticeably smaller lighter, and therefore is not directly replaced by the CN70. What is clear is that with the new CN70, Intermec has issued a technology refresh of the standard industrial PDA without, however, breaking new operating platform or interface ground (like exploring Android or capacitive touch).

Device drivers usually live within a single kernel subsystem. Sometimes,however, developers need to handle functionalities outside of this model.Consider, for example, a network interface card (NIC) exposing both Ethernet andRDMA functionalities. There is one hardware block, but two drivers for thetwo functions. Those drivers need to work within their respectivesubsystems, but they must also share access to the same hardware. There isno standard way in current kernels to connect those drivers together, sodevelopers invent ad-hoc methods to handle the interaction betweenthem. Recently, Dave Ertman posteda patch set introducing a new type of a bus, called the 'auxiliary bus', toaddress this problem.
Complex devices
Linux already includes a number of drivers for multi-functiondevices. One of the ways to support them is the Multi-FunctionDevices (MFD) subsystem. It handles independent devices 'glued'together into one hardware block which may contain some sharedresources. MFD allows access to device registers either directly, or usinga common bus. In this second case, it conveniently multiplexes accesses onInter-Integrated Circuit(I2C) or SerialPeripheral Interface (SPI) buses. As the MFD sub-devices are separate,MFD drivers do not share a common state.
The devices Ertman addresses do not fit well into the MFD model.Devices using the auxiliary bus provide subsets of the capabilities of asingle hardware device. They do not expose separate register sets for eachfunction; thus they cannot be described by devicetrees or discovered byACPI. Their drivers need to share access to the hardware. Events concerning allsub-functionalities (like power management) need to be properly handled byall drivers. These devices will often be specialized processors runningfirmware and communicating with the host system (and the Linux drivers) bymessaging. The available functions may not be known in advance, and thusmust be discovered at run time.
The documentationpatch in the auxiliary bus series cites a number of examples. The SoundOpen Firmware (SOF) driver interacts with a single device exposinginterfaces like HDMI output, microphones, speakers, testing, and debughooks. NICs implementing both Ethernet and RDMA may need a driversupporting a common part of the functionalities, and then the specificEthernet and RDMA drivers can implement specific parts on top of that.
Current kernels do not have a generic way to describe dependenciesbetween drivers for this kind of device. A solution to the problem could beto have a way to attach secondary drivers to the primaryone; this is exactly what the auxiliary bus implements.
Auxiliary devices and drivers
The patch set introduces two main concepts: The 'auxiliary device' and'auxiliary driver'. These implement the relationship between the main andthe secondary drivers. The main driver maintains the device state, allocating and managing all shared data. It also unregisters all secondarydrivers when shutting down. Secondary drivers, instead, handle theinteractions with the specific subsystem they are implementing a devicefor.
Each main driver may expose a number of functionalities (devices) forsecondary drivers. Only one secondary driver can attach to each of thosefunctionalities.
The main driver creates an auxiliary device, represented by structauxiliary_device:
The combination of name and id must be unique; thecomplete device name is a combination of the module name and those twofields, connected by dots (.). That yields a result likemodname.device_name.id.
The developer embeds this structure in the device structure ofthe main driver, with all shared data necessary for the communicationbetween the main driver and secondary drivers. They may also addsupplementary callbacks.
The sequence to initialize the main driver contains two steps. The firstone is to call auxiliary_device_init():
It verifies the arguments and returns anerror code if need be; in such case the initialization of the deviceshould be aborted.If the first call succeeds, the second step is to call the macroauxiliary_device_add() with the initialized device; this willset up the device name and register the deviceitself.
The unregistration procedure also has two steps, consisting of calls toauxiliary_device_uninit() (necessary from the point whenauxiliary_device_init() has succeeded) andauxiliary_device_delete(). Those functions have the followingprototypes:
This two-step approach was implemented inresponse to comments on earlier versions of the patch set. It allows the driver to allocate itsown data between auxiliary_device_init() andauxiliary_device_add() with a possibility to free it correctly inthe case of a failure.
The secondary devices, which will connect to the main driver,are represented by struct auxiliary_driver:
This structure includes a number of callbacks to manage thedevice's life cycle, and the id_table containing names of thedevices the driver can bind with. All callbacks receive pointers to theparent's auxiliary_device, allowing access to the shareddata.
The secondary devices are set up with auxiliary_driver_register():
This function requires the probe() callback and theid_table to be filled in. When successful, it causes aprobe() callback call for any matching devices. The secondarydevices can access the shared data using container_of() and theauxiliary_device structure.
When unregistering a driver, the developer should callauxiliary_driver_unregister():
